Why do forklift accidents continue to happen?

Forklifts are both common and necessary to a variety of industries. But did you know that these vehicles can also be extremely dangerous?

There are many reasons why forklift accidents happen, and if you work around or with them, you should become aware of the dangers. With the right knowledge, it’s much easier to avoid trouble if you are using, or working in close proximity to forklifts.

Here are some of the top causes of forklift accidents:

  • Lack of training. It may seem that operating a forklift is simple, but adequate training must be provided.
  • Speeding and other forms of reckless operation. Driving a forklift too fast increases the chance of an accident.
  • Moving a forklift with an elevated load. This can lead to many types of trouble, such as the load falling to the ground and injuring another worker.
  • Poor workplace design. It can be a challenge to operate a forklift in a tight space, such as when boxes are piled up on the ground. If forklifts will be in operation, it’s vital the design of the workplace accommodates their safe operation.

No matter how hard you try, a forklift accident could happen on the job at some point. If you find yourself in this position, call for immediate medical help. Also, make sure you report the incident to your employer, as you want your company to know the exact circumstances surrounding what happened.

Taking these steps can make the difference between receiving ‘ benefits being denied should your injuries from the forklift accident leave you unable to return to work.
