A Gratiot Township truck accident on State Highway 78 led to serious injury when a 60-year-old woman was hit by a 48-year-old man who ran a stop sign. The Freightliner truck driver failed to stop at a traffic sign on South Prairie Road and pulled into Highway 78 where the woman struck him. Initially, her Ford sedan went under the large truck but then spun in the roadway and landed in a ditch on the side of the road. The truck came to a stop on the road.
The car driver was extricated from the wreckage of her car and flown to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The truck driver sustained no injuries in the crash. Fortunately, the car driver was later released from the hospital and is at home recuperating from her injuries.
Accidents between large trucks and small cars almost always end in injuries for the car driver rather than the truck driver. A car simply does not provide the protection from injury offered by a large truck; furthermore, large trucks carry much greater amounts of force than cars because of their greater size and weight. When a truck hits a car, it is far more likely that the car’s occupants will sustain serious injury than that the driver or passengers in the large truck will be injured.
