Port Washington man attacked by an unlicensed dog

On Thanksgiving, a Port Washington man was attacked and received multiple animal bites by a neighbor's dog. He was in the process of carrying bags out his car when the dog escaped its leash and began biting him. Although the man kicked the dog in self-defense, he sustained injuries to his hand, head and groin before the animal could be pulled off by its owner.

After police responded to a 911 call reporting the attack, the man was taken to the hospital where he was treated for his injuries, including stitches on his ear. A bag the man had been carrying was found at the scene with froth from the dog's mouth on it.

It was noted in the report that the dog was a "pit bull-type dog." It was also noted that before the man was attacked, a woman warned him to "remain still because the dog bites." The owners of the dog claimed that their pet had aggression issues due to contact with other dogs that had come onto their property.

The dog was not registered with the city nor were its rabies shots up-to-date. As a result, the animal was impounded and the owners cited. In similar cases, it has been common for victims of animal attacks to seek compensation for their injuries and emotional suffering. Dog attacks can be very serious and sometimes result in permanent disabilities for the victims. Owners that fail to properly license, vaccinate and leash their pets run the risk of facing serious consequences.
