Police give up pursuit right before fatal Wisconsin car accident

In the early morning of Dec. 8, Milwaukee police were called to the scene of a car accident on W. Burleigh. It is believed that the accident occurred when a car traveling westbound on W. Burleigh drove across the center line into the eastbound lane. Shortly before the collision, police officers saw the vehicle driving without lights and attempted to pull it over. The driver refused to stop.

Officers initially pursued the vehicle, but gave up on N. 23rd Street. Shortly thereafter, they received a call reporting a fatal car accident on 32nd. They later confirmed that it was the same vehicle. Witnesses also reported that, at the time of the car accident, police cars were not following the westbound vehicle.

The 29-year-old driver of the car that hit the other vehicle and three other occupants were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening. Police believe that a fifth individual in that car may have fled the scene on foot after the collision, possibly with others. A passenger of the westbound vehicle that was hit, a 33-year-old woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. Police did not reveal what caused the accident.

When a person is killed in an accident, that person's heirs may be able to bring suit against any party that caused the accident through careless or negligent behavior. Family members may be entitled to recover for any property damage that occurred, funeral costs and medical bills. It may also be possible to seek funds to compensate the family members for the victim's lost earning potential over the person's remaining life expectancy.
