Factors that affect compensation for car accidents

When you get into a car accident that you don't feel is your fault, you might opt to seek compensation for the injuries you suffer in the accident. What you might not realize is that even though you don't think you are at fault, there is a possibility that you will be found partially at fault for the accident. That, however, is only one factor that might affect the amount of compensation you receive.

Generally, the police report can affect your accident. Because of this, it is vital that you go over the report to ensure that it is accurate. Even errors that seem small can have an affect on the compensation you get. Witness statements and photos of the scene of the accident can also have an impact on the compensation. If you are able to take pictures of the accident, do so. Of course, that isn't possible if you have injuries that require immediate medical care.

Another factor that can play a part in compensation awards is the medical care you received. Not only does the type of care matter, but the speed at which you sought medical care can affect it. Additionally, the presence of any pre-existing conditions can affect the compensation. If you have an injury that was worsened by the accident, imaging results from before and after the accident can be compared to determine the extent of the problem.

If you missed work because of the accident or your injuries, you should keep track of the hours you missed. You can also make note of the wages you lost. By combining that information with the other information pertaining to your case, you can come up with an estimate of how much compensation you should seek when you file a claim through the Wisconsin civil court system.
