How to eliminate distractions on a construction site

The construction site is one of the most dangerous places you can work in Saint Croix. Between the power tools, working at elevated levels, trenches, electricity, heavy machinery and human error; a job in construction is incredibly dangerous. You need to eliminate as many distractions on a construction site as possible in order to remain safe and we will explain how you can do that.

If you are responsible for operating heavy machinery or any type of vehicle, even an ATV, do not use your phone at all. Put the phone in a locked console or even leave it in your locker. You likely have some form of radio system in the vehicle with you should you need to contact anyone.

When working on scaffolding, or anytime working high in the air, try not to talk much to the others working with you. Put all of your focus on getting the job done safely and without risking injury to yourself.

It might be nice to have music playing where you are working on the construction site, but it can be distracting. You might find yourself humming or singing along to a song and not paying attention to what you are doing with the power tool in your hand.

Life can also distract you. If you are having trouble at home, and it has affected your ability to concentrate, take a day or two off from work. When working in construction, you need to have a solid focus on what you are doing now. Trouble at home could make it difficult to pay attention.

If you are able to eliminate most of the distractions found on your construction site, you should be able to focus more on the task at hand each day. There's nothing wrong with reporting hazards or unsafe workers to those in charge. Your safety and life should be a top priority. If you don't feel safe, let someone know why.
