The summer is right around the corner in Wisconsin, which means that thousands of will be handling their job duties outdoors in the heat. As much as you might be excited to say good bye to the cold temperatures, working in the heat can wind up causing serious health problems if you are not safe. Here’s how to prepare to work in the heat of the summer sun.
Dress for the sun and the heat. Wear a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, loose fitting clothing and more. Do not dress in layers as this will only keep the heat in your body. And, even though a hat will keep heat on your head, it helps keep the sun from beating directly on your body.
Drink plenty of fluids that energize the body. This includes water and other drinks that provide nutrients. Try to avoid drinking coffee, soda and energy drinks when working outdoors.
Take breaks as much as you can. When working outside in the heat, your employer should have no problem allowing you to take breaks every so often. When you take breaks, make sure you do so in the shade, in an air conditioned vehicle or inside.
Don’t hesitate to seek medical care if you are feeling ill. Either utilize the first aid team employed by your company or call 911. You don’t want to take any chances with heat exhaustion.
The summer heat can be wonderful when sitting poolside or at the beach. But, when working outdoors for your job, the heat can be dangerous and even deadly. If you do not prepare for working outdoors you could wind up in the hospital with heat exhaustion.
