How you can reduce your risk of being in an intersection crash

Busy intersections can be a hotbed for motor vehicle accidents. Safety is dependent on everyone being patient, attentive, and obedient to traffic rules.

Even if you are an extremely careful driver, you can still suffer a severe injury due to the negligence of other motorists. To protect yourself and your passengers, it is best to follow a few simple best practices to mitigate your risk of experiencing an intersection accident.

Avoid checking your phone at the light

Statistics released by the CDC indicate that around 3,000 people die each year as a result of distracted driving. While you might feel safe checking your phone while stopped at a red light because you are not “driving,” you might create a dangerous situation as you scramble to put your phone down when the light turns green.

Do not turn into traffic with an obstructed view

It is extremely risky to turn into another lane of traffic if you cannot check for oncoming vehicles. This is particularly common when turning right at a red light when the vehicle on your left might be blocking your view down the lane.

Play it safe

When facing an unfamiliar situation at a traffic intersection, it is best to simply play it safe. If you see signage you do not recognize or are unsure of who has the right of way, avoid making hasty actions and be sure to brush up on your knowledge when you arrive safely back home.

Accidents at busy intersections can have a domino effect that potentially brings harm to many people. Protect yourself and others by making good decisions, and be sure to seek immediate medical attention if you do experience a vehicle collision.
